Lesson #14

Lesson #14

The Great Women of the Bible

Opening Observations

Jesus surprised people by the way he cared for, talked to, and respected women.

John’s Gospel says that Jesus’ disciples were once “greatly surprised” to find Jesus talking to a woman, for religious teachers did not speak to women in public in those days. John 4:27

Look up the Bible references given for each woman. Write down her good points.

Mary’s song

My soul praises the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for he has been mindful

of the humble estate of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name.

His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.

He has filled the hungry with good things but he has sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants for ever, even as he said to our fathers.

Luke 1:46 –55

Concluding thought

• In an age when women were despised and marginalized, the apostle Paul’s statement in Galatians 3:28 was revolutionary.
