Matthew 5:8 – “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
What would be some of the characteristics of such people? (i.e. morally pure, hones, and sincere….)
What is “the meaning”?

The theological meaning of καρδία is more significant than simple anthropological usage: The καρδία is the “place” of the person in which the encounter with God is realized in the positive or negative sense, in which religious life has its firm ground, and from which the ethical conduct of the person is determined. A peculiar instance is to be seen in the formulas of benediction in 1 Thess 3:11–13; 2 Thess 2:16–17; 3:5. In these texts the request is made to God in a hymnic way that he might establish, encourage, and strengthen the hearts of the believers.

The heart is the center of emotions, feelings, moods, and passions. Equated with the heart are joy (Deut. 28:47; Acts 2:26), grief (Ps. 13:2; Lam. 2:11), ill-temper (Deut. 15:10), love (Phil. 1:7), courage (2 Sam. 17:10; Ps. 27:14), and fear (Gen. 42:28). A swollen heart breeds arrogance (Isa. 9:9), which is in marked contrast to the gentle and lowly heart of Jesus (Matt. 11:29).
The heart understands (Deut. 8:5; Isa. 42:25), As We Learned Before….
provides wisdom to rule justly and wisely (1 Kings 3:12; 10:24),
discerns good and evil (1 Kings 2:44).
The heart also represents the idea of volition and conscience (1 Sam. 24:5; 2 Sam. 24:10).
The request for a pure heart is the desire for a new and more perfect conscience (Ps. 51:10; Matt. 5:8).8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

The verse shows us what about the heart being the center for….. ?

Joel 2:12 – 12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; This verse shows that the heart is a place one finds C________.
In Scripture it represents more than just one’s emotions and feelings.
It also includes the T________P_____ and particularly the W_____.
Matthew 9:4 – 4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
Therefore what does Proverbs 4:23 warn? Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Note how at 1 Samuel 16:7 confirms about what God is concerned with? 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure (Katharos) in heart, for they shall see God.
Pure translates katharos, a form of the word from which we get catharsis.

What meaning do you give the word, “pure”?
Double-mindedness has always been one of the great plagues of the church. We want to serve the Lord and follow the world at the same time.
Apply: Matthew 6:24 – 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Apply: James 4:4 – 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Apply: James 4:8 – 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Romans 7:15, 21, 25:
“For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate…. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good…. So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin”
Is ”sincerity” and equal to “Purity of heart”? 1 Kings 18:28
When people that crawl on their knees for hundreds of yards, bleeding and grimacing in pain, to show their devotion to a saint or a shrine? Question: Is this a sign of “purity of heart” why or why not?
Greek:“Katharos” – Translated Pure (guiltless)PURE – Greek word used has been translated mostly as “pure”, but also as “clear” – “innocent” – “clean”

Man’s tendency is to set the opposite standard.
Carried to its extreme, that spiral of judgment would go down and down until it reached the most rotten person on earth—
Luke 18:11 – 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
What standard does man use?
Psalms 24:3-4 “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.”
What is it that separates man from God?
Isa. 59:1-2 – “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”

We ask ourselves: What is the way to Holiness? God always provides for what He demands:
What would be the result of Holiness?
One sign of an impure heart is I__________, because sin obscures the truth (John 3:19-20). Evil and I_________ come in a package.

Matthew 5:9 – states that
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be call son of God..”
2 Cor. 13:11 – 11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Phil. 4:9 –9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Scripture contains nearly four hundred direct references to peace, and many more indirect ones.
What interrupted the peace for the human family?
What two reasons are there no peace today?
We do not have economic peace, religious peace, racial peace, social peace, family peace, or personal peace.
What happen when we consider “self” as first? Where does that place “peace”?
Looking at the Greek Word translated “peacemaker”
εἰρηνοποιός, όν of establishing a friendly relationship between persons peace-making; substantivally peacemaker (MT 5.9)
It is said that: The Meaning of Peace is Righteousness and Truth….
What does the Jewish greeting “shalom” mean?
What does James 3:17 teach us? 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
IN Hebrews 12:14 it links peace with what?
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Jesus seems to say an opposite in Matthew 10:34 – How would we explain it?
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Therefore, what is the great enemy of “Peace”?
Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
James 3:16-18 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
The maker of peach is GOD! Eph. 2:13-14 –
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
The messengers of peace are believers in Jesus Christ. Only they can be peacemakers.
2 cor. 5:19-20 – 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
At least four things characterize a peacemaker. They Are:
Romans 5:10 – 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Eph. 6:15 – 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

#2 – The peacemaker leads others to make peace with God. They are not Christians who are part of an elite corps of those who have spiritually arrived and who look down on the rest of the world.
The peacemaking spirit is the opposite of that. It is built on humility, sorrow over its own sin, gentleness, hunger for righteousness, mercy, and purity of heart.
#3 -The peacemaker helps others to make _____________ with others. Romans 12:18 instructs us to do what?
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Matthew 5:44-45 instructs us to……………
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
How does Matthew 18:15-17 fit in this process? If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Third: A peacemaker helps others to make peace with others.
Fourth, a peacemaker endeavors to find a point of agreement.
- God’s people are to contend without being contentious, to disagree without being disagreeable, and to confront without being abusive. The peacemaker speaks the truth in love (Eph. 4:15).
Eph. 4:15 says: 15but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
To start with love is to start toward peace. We begin peacemaking by starting with whatever peaceful point of agreement we can find.
- Peace helps beget peace.
- The peacemaker always gives others the benefit of the doubt. He never assumes they will resist the gospel or reject his testimony.
- When he does meet opposition, he tries to be patient with other people’s blindness and stubbornness just as he knows the Lord was, and continues to be, patient with his own blindness and stubbornness.
The Merit of Peace: Eternal Sonship in the Kingdom
Peacemaking is a hallmark of God’s children.
