Lesson #19

The Death of Jesus and Studying a Single Word: Humility

Luke 23:46 (See also Matthew 27:50 and Mark 15:37 , where Jesus dismisses his spirit.)

What to Look for in the Events Listed

• Look at the impact of each event on the people around Jesus.

• Notice where a gospel writer is the only one to record a particular event. Why do you think he included it? What does it add?

• Note that Jesus “said” seven things when he was on the cross (sometimes called his “seven words” from the cross). What does each reveal about Jesus?

• See how these events shed light on the words of Mark 10:45 .

Concluding Thought

• Some people say that at end of Jesus’ life came as a result of “circumstances” (the Romans and the Jews), and as a consequence he was killed. But read Mark 8:31 –9:1 and Mark 10:32 –34, which show that Jesus foretold the details of his death.
