Names-of-God-1

Names of God-1:

One might look at what God is giving us to be His name at that time as finding a treasure for you.  I think of the parable of the one finding a treasure in a field going and selling everything so he can buy the field to gain the treasure.    In this case we search out God’s Name to gain the understanding of His action or position toward us or others.  Proverbs tells us that His name is a “strong tower”.  Psalms states that “awesome is His name.”

Proverbs 18:10 –            The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

Psalms 111:9 –  He sent redemption to his people;  he has commanded his covenant forever.  Holy and awesome is his name!

Starting out in Genesis where He is called “Elohim” revealing Himself as the all-powerful Creator.

Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”

Notice the blue area…

1st line is the text in the Bible – “God”

2nd line is the MSS  – the Manuscript  (The actual form of the Greek word in the test.)

3rd line is the Lemma Transliterated  (The word put into English Letters.)  (The word is taken from the Byzantine text for the base.)

4th line is the Strong’s dictionary Identification numbering system ID.

5th line is the “sense” –  The sense of what the Hebrew word means.

Elohim

In the Lemma Tri – line one sees the name:; Elohim   –  The Hebrew word  God assigned Himself at “the strong creator God” .  The English languages does not have a exact word so they just use “God” or “GOD” or “LORD” – one has to go to an interbinary text to find the actual word used in Hebrew or Greek according to where you are in the Bible.

This name shows that a quality of God is “Creator” – Creator of all.  This is His Creation we are part of.

God created time as He was  the beginning – To create starts ‘time’ for what was created.  He is the ONLY Creator and above all Gods that arise.  God is everywhere and we can not really comprehend that reality.  By creating the earth we know, He created a location and a time.   God exists out of it and yet fills the heavens and the earth that is now existing due to His creation of it.  As Elohim, God personally interacts with His creation.

Jehovah – the relational God.

This name is some 6519 times in the Old Testament – Jehovah (“I Am Who I Am”)

Rad the account of Jehovah talking to Moses answering his question as to whom he should tell Pharaoh that was telling him to let his people go.

Exodus 3:13-15

13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

In Hebrew it would be “Yahweh” or the tetragrammaton “YHWH” – Translated in English as “Jehovah”.  In the Bible we find this name written in all caps as:  GOD, LORD

Jehovah is the personal God that personally reveals Himself to us, often through the trials and struggles we face.

“Adonai” – the God Who Rules…

This is found some 400 times in the Bible  –

Psalm 97:5  The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,  before the Lord of all the earth.

Note the SENSE for each of the Hebrew Words….

Plural:  Adonai

Singular:  Adon

The first LORD is “YHWH” (Yahweh)

The 2nd LORD is “adon”  (singular)  Adonai (plural)

In the Strong’s Dictionary:

H113 – אָדוֹן ʾâdôwn, aw-done´, or (short.) אָדֹן ʾâdôn, aw-done´; from an unused root (mean. to rule); sovereign, i.e. controller (human or divine):—lord, master, owner. Comp. also names beginning with “Adoni-”.

H3068 –  Yehôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw´; from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord. comp. .[1]

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord Will Provide

The background for  the revelation of this name is in Genesis 22:1-2:

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

God is testing Abraham and also provides the solution with a sheep caught in the thicket.

It has been stated that we often miss the purpose of the text (Life’s trials) beause we fix our thinking on circumstances or the stress.

Let me quote from the book:  “he Power of God’s Names” by Tony Evans:

God put Abraham in a situation that only God could fix.  Therefore when it is solved we would know it was God that did it.  (Jehovah Jireh, The Lord Will Provide.)

Gen. 22:12:  He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

To explain Tony Evans wrote this:

Yet while God knows everything actual and potential, God doesn’t necessarily know everything ‘experientially’.  Which explains the verse Genesis 22:12.  …He is saying to Abraham, “Now I have experienced that you fear Me.”

God isn’t only a God of knowledge – He’s also a God of experience.  He enters into our emotions.  Why does He seat Himself on that praises of His people, as we read in the book of Psalms?  Why doesn’t He just sit back, relax, and say, “I know what praise is.  All the information on praise is available to Me.  In fact, I know who is going to praise Me, who is praising Me now, and who has praised Me in the pass —  and what’s more, I know who mans it.  I don’t need anyone to praise Me because I already know everything there is to know about praise.

However, Psalm 22:3  “ Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.”  –  Something about us praising God brings Him pleasure.  He purposefully and willingly participates in the experience.”

Many of us don’t know God as “Jehovah Jireh” because God is still waiting for us to act on what He said even though we may not understand how it’s going to work out.  One needs to do what God has instructed you to do about it, even if it doesn’t make sense, simply because He has your best interest at heart.

He has various names to reflect the many ways He relates to humanity.  Here are a couple examples:

Johovah Nissi – the Lord’s banner of victory

Jehovah Rapha – the Lord is your healer

Jehovah Jireh – God, the provider

Ezekiel 7:9   Jehovah Nakah – Jehovah Strikes

. And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the Lord, who strikes.   Jehovah Nakah   (Jehovah Strikes)

The message closed by stunning the exiles with a new name for God: “The Lord who strikes the blow” (YHWH makkeh), the one who would now judge Judah (v.9b).[2]  Quote EBC….

“I am” – Jehovah

More to follow in this series as our pastor continues to discuss the name of God in Sunday evening services.

Name Of God: Who Sits Between The Cherubim

We can be taught a lot by a study of the names of God.  The name tells us who, what, when, where, how, and more concerning His purpose and activities.  Basically these names identify Him for who He is and What he does &/or will do.

The activity of the mercy seat is fulfilled in the ‘day of atonement’ – which is the day/time that Jesus gives up his life on the cross for us.   The day of the atonement for the “sins” of the world.

Read below the Bible on “The Day of Atonement”  –  Leviticus 16:1-14

The Name Of God – He who sets above the two Cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant.

Read: Ex. 25:10-22

Ex. 25:22 – “I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim”

There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.  esv

Numbers 7:89 – “above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim”

89 And when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and it spoke to him. -esv

1 Samuel 4:4 – Lord of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim

So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.   esv

2 Samuel 6:2 –  Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim

And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim.  esv

2 Kings 19:15 – “Enthroned above the Cherubim”

15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said: “O Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.  esv

The Day of Atonement  –  Leviticus 16:1-14

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the Lord and died, and the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on. And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

“Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering, 10 but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.

11 “Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. 12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil 13 and put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die. 14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
